Amusing Things I Run Across in My Pancake Research

Image
While I am still only in the A countries of the world, I have run across a few weird and funny things as I research each country's pancakes.  I shared one a few weeks ago when I talked a little bit about Antarctica.  Remember, I found a link to a fake (I think) Antarctica university that serves penguin in their dining hall? I started doing some research for my last A country tomorrow, and in the process, discovered these two videos.  They are by a person who goes by the name GiR2007 on You Tube.  I thought they were amusing, and I decided to share them with you as a pre-Sunday treat to some pancakes.  Enjoy!

Welcome to my Pancake Blog

So, what does a person with no children and free time do?  Why think of creative ways to eat of course.  So begins the Around the World in Pancake Sundays project. One day while eating pancakes made from sprouted wheat and chocolate chips, I started thinking about how fun it would be to eat a different type of pancake each Sunday.  I know, you must be stuck on the whole sprouted wheat pancakes.  I'm sure many are thinking eeeeewwww, sounds yucky right now.  However, they are actually quite tasty.  I was given my first taste of them by a friend last New Year's Eve (well, technically the morning after New Year's Eve).  I was so enamored of them that I went searching for my own sprouted wheat to make some for myself a couple of months later. O.K., enough digressing.  While eating the above mentioned pancakes, started thinking about eating a different type of pancake each Sunday.  I began to wonder if I could find a different type of pancake for ...

Pancakes, Take 3 - Ghana & Gibraltar

Image
It's been awhile since I posted about pancakes, but I've become semi-consistent in eating pancakes once again.  My pancake travels have recently taken me to Ghana followed by Gibraltar.  Unfortunately I can't seem to find the pictures I took while making pancakes for either of these two countries.  So, I'm going to post the video I followed for Ghanian pancakes, and a link to the website I used for pancakes from Gibraltar. Ghana In Ghana, the pancakes are thin and crepe like.  I really enjoyed the nutmeg flavor of these pancakes.  The taste of them reminded me of a family sugar cookie recipe that my mom made for us growing up.  Below is the video.  For the full printed recipe, click here . Gibraltar For Gibraltar, I opted for a less traditional pancake.  While doing the research for Gibraltar, I discovered a website called Momma Lotties .  This website is run by a gentleman named Justin, and he focuses on cuisine from Gibraltar.    ...

I'm Back and moving on to Germany in My Pancake Travels

Image
So, I'm finally back to my worldly pancake travels and blogging.  My recent pancake travels have reminded me how "interesting" they can be! Before I jump right into the pancake blogging, here's a little info. about why my travels came to such an abrupt halt.  The last year has been extremely busy and hectic for me.  In addition to continuing to care for a very sick dog (see this post if you are interested in learning more),  A few months later, I was given a new role also, a role in which I wore (and continue to wear) many different hats, but most of those hats had a technology emphasis. So when I wasn't caring for my dogs, I was a pretty big workaholic for much of the time I was gone. Then last November, I lost my Mac to the cancer tumor that was in his chest.  It was one of the toughest things I've had to go through because despite the fact that he was still taking care of his needs and going for walks, he was no longer able to eat food (the tumor in his ch...

Georgia On My Mind . . .

Image
So, I once again found myself in a world without pancake Sundays.  I havne't had a whole lof time to discover the pancakes for my next country.   During my time away, I did make pancakes from Georgia and Germany.  I just haven't had the time to blog about it yet.  Now, finding a little bit of free time on my hands, I decided to go ahead and blog about these two countries.  So, without further ado, I move on to Georgia. Before giving you the pancake recipe from Georgia, I just wanted to mention that my travels first took us back to Africa, to the countries of Gabon and The Gambia.  However, I had the same problem I've often had in African countries, no pancakes that I could discover.  After some pretty serious investigating, I decided to move on to Georgia.  As always, if anyone knows of pancakes from either of these two countries and can point me in the right direction, I'd gladly revisit these two countries. In Georgia, pancakes are called mchadi...

More crepes? I think not!

Image
I've arrived in Finland where, like many European nations, they do actually eat crepes.  However, I soon learned that they also have their own unique baked pancake called an Aland pancake.  It's called this because it comes from the Aland region of Finland.  This region isn't a part of mainland Finland.  It is a group of islands in the Baltic Sea.  Also, in addition to this being a baked pancake, the Finnish people call their pancakes pannukakku. I discovered many different ways of making pannukakku, each involving different types of grains.  I found some of them use regular all purpose flour, while others use rice or semolina flour in combination with all purpose flour.  I opted for a recipe that used a combination of semolina flour and all purpose flour.  Here is what you'll need to make the version of Finnish pannukakku that I made: 4 cups of milk 1/3 cup of semolina flour 1 teaspoon salt 4 eggs 1/2 cup of sugar 1 cup of flour 1 tablespoon card...
