Another One Bites the Dust

Ack!  Another hour bites the dust as I once again find myself sucked into StumbleUpon.  Seriously, that website is addictive!  I would like to find out how it determines which types of websites it is going to stumble you to though.  Unlike other times when I've tried stumbling to pancake websites, tonight was different.  While I did get taken to pancake recipes and blogs with pancake recipes on them, tonight I was also taken to news articles about pancakes.  I have been taken to news articles in the past about pancakes, however, those articles have always included a pancake recipe in them.  What was different about some of the news articles I stumbled upon tonight though was that quite a few of them didn't have ANY pancake recipe on them.  Anyway, I thought it would be fun to share them.  The first one I stumbled to talked about an alien sighting.  Take a look at it, and let me know what you think. The Land of the Magical Fruit - Burkina Faso

Image
This Sunday brings us to Burkina Faso, and I must say that I'm quite ecstatic to be writing a post about it on the same day that we actually ate the pancakes.  Woohoo!  I guess that's what happens when you have the following week off of work and none of your errands seem all that pressing. For those of you familiar with the old saying about beans, you might have already guessed from the title of this post that this week's pancakes involves beans, black eyed peas to be more specific.  Our visit to Burkina Faso takes us back to the African continent this week.  It should come as no surprise to anyone familiar with the region that Burkina Fasoans eat a bean type of pancake just as those residing in Benin.  Burkina Faso and Benin border each other for a small portion of each's border.  Of course I had no clue about this until I started my research for this week's pancake, that's half of the fun of this project, discovering new and interesting facts about the wo...

Cheese Me Please - Bulgarian Palachinka

Image
This week we find ourselves once again in Eastern Europe eating palachinka (aka crepes).  We arrived in Bulgaria, only to discover that there was a delay in our departure to pancake land.  Delay you say?  Yes, there was a delay.  We should really read the recipes we find in their entirety so that we can be prepared and able to eat pancakes for breakfast in the morning.  The particular Bulgarian palachinka recipe that we found requires a 2 hour - overnight refrigeration process.  Thus, despite the fact that we were super hungry this morning, we weren't able to eat palachinka for breakfast.  Instead we had strawberry smoothies.  Here is what our breakfast smoothies looked like as we looked at them in the blender from up above. We did eat palachinka today, we just ate them for lunch instead.  I have to thank Faux Chef for 5 for her lovely palachinka recipe.  Her husband is Bulgarians, and she makes him these when he is missing home....

Brunei, You Make My Tummy Hurt in a Good Way

Image
We now arrive in Southeast Asia in the country of Brunei.  I must mention that we made a few detours on our way here.  We detoured through Bouvet Island, British Ocean Indian Territory, and British Virgin Islands.  We opted not to make pancake stops in any of these places because they are in fact territories of the United Kingdom.  As such, everything we found for pancakes in these places were typically British pancakes.  Hence, we made the decision to not include any places that are territories of other countries in our blog.  Of course, if someone from one of these places has a pancake recipe that is unique to that region, we'll be happy to revisit them! As a result of this decision, we are now in Brunei.  We found quite a few Bruneian dishes that could qualify as pancakes, some more than others seemed to qualify.  In the process we discovered some yummy looking savory dishes called martabak asin, which is a savory type of pancake thing.  H...

So Sorry Botswana, We Have to Move on to Brazil

Image
So our next stop takes us to Botswana, but try as we did, we just couldn't find a recipe for pancakes in Botswana.  We did find that they are called diphaphatha.  After a couple of weeks of trying to find a recipe for diphatphatha without much luck, we decided to move on to Brazil. We discovered that Brazil has a savory stuffed pancake.  As in Argentina, Brazilians call their pancakes panqueques.  They are not as thin as a crepe, but they also aren't as thick as a typical pancake that you would find in the United States.  So, without further ado, here is how to make Brazilian panqueques. For the panqueques you'll need: 3 cups of flour 2 cups of milk 2 eggs 4 tablespoons oil salt to taste For the filling you'll need: 500 grams of ground beef 1 large tomato 1 large onion 1 tablespoon oregano 1 tablespoon cooking oil 1 cup of tomato juice 1 beef bullion cube You'll want to make the filling for the panqueques first.  We didn't use ground beef for our filling, i...

Did Someone Say Chocolate Sauce? - Bosnia and Herzegovina

Image
Once again I find myself slightly behind in blogging. This seems to be a common theme for me.   I think I sometimes live too closely by the quote "Procrastinators unite . . . tomorrow!"  Either that, or I'm a complete hedonist and let other things distract me from the important ones like pancake blogging.  Either way, I'm attempting to catch up again.  The good news is that there were a couple of weeks where we didn't make pancakes because of a half marathon run/bike ride race and company in from out of town; which means I only have about 3 countries to catch up on.  Yay! So off we go to Eastern Europe once again as we visit Bosnia and Herzegovina.  Bosnians like to eat crepes.  They call them palacinke (pronounced pah-lah-cheen-kah).  While finding a crepe recipe isn't too hard, finding one that is a Bosnian crepe recipe was a bit challenging.  Alas, we prevailed in our search for a Bosnian palacinke recipe.  We also discovered that Bos...
